Award presentation speech from ASSP Broken Top Chapter President David McClung
This person has been a valuable member of the safety community in central Oregon, always willing to help out and educate others. He’s been a mentor to me both in my professional life, as well as within ASSP. He shares his experience with how to navigate new situations to help keep employees in central Oregon safe, and also shares his previous ASSP experience to help make sure our newly founded chapter runs well and doesn’t get into trouble. He’s always on the lookout for how we can run our chapter better, and how to avoid pitfalls that other chapters have fallen into in the past.
Several years ago, when a handful of us scratched together the new Section here in Central Oregon, I got to know this person and was impressed with their leadership and dogged commitment to supporting ASSP in getting a foothold in the area. Shortly afterward I had the opportunity to work with and learn from him. He has been approachable, knowledgeable, friendly, welcoming, and an all-around great guy. He is an inspiration. I’ve had opportunity to partner on several projects with him and have enjoyed the comradery and dedication he’s poured into those projects.
He is well respected for his generosity of spirit and kindness, dedication to his family and his work, his technical knowledge, and his undying passion for helping people. He has an ability to easily build trusting relationships as he is sincere and direct in his approach. He is a natural leader. He respects people, sees the best in them, and encourages them to achieve excellence.
His commitment to Broken Top is unparalleled as well. He singlehandedly coordinates and executes one of our annual fundraising events by teaching OSHA 10 classes in Boardman, OR. He also has stepped in this past year to help out with updating our chapter’s website while we look for a webmaster. Additionally, he has been serving as our Jobs Chair, helping to post positions and get people hired within and outside of the chapter area.
I cannot think of another candidate more deserving of the Broken Top Chapter SPY award than Luke Betts. He exemplifies the exquisite balance of professional expertise and the ability to establish strong, influential, and healthy interpersonal relationships.
