The Senior Outreach Manager will design and deliver education, training, and partnership activities for the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences (Occ Health Sci), including our Total Worker Health (TWH) portfolio, serving as Occ Health Sci’s lead for practitioner education, including the development and delivery of our groundbreaking TWH curriculum. The Senior Outreach Manager serves as a member of the Occ Health Sci Outreach team, as well as the Outreach Core for the Oregon Healthy Workforce Center, a TWH Center of Excellence funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
The Senior Outreach Manager will be a subject matter expert in occupational health/safety and work organization in one or more of the following areas: occupational safety/health, education, training, consulting, enforcement, public-private partnership development; additional experience/expertise in organizational systems and employee well-being is desirable. The Senior Outreach Manager will have knowledge of policies/practices pertinent to worker well-being and be familiar with general occupational health/safety context, with the ability to communicate with scientists conducting research in occupational health/safety and organizational change, and to translate research findings into practice through presentations, popular media, and social media.
Function/Duties of Position:
Practitioner Education and Training Development and Delivery:
- Total Worker Health: Serve as Occ Health Sci lead on developing practitioner education relevant to the TWH approach; update existing curricula and develop new curricula; publicize and present content in the Pacific Northwest and throughout the US (virtually and/or at live events); play lead role in further development of the Oregon TWH Alliance, a partnership of Occ Health Sci Institute, Oregon OSHA, and the SAIF Corporation, designed to disseminate TWH principles.
- Occ Health Sci Symposia and Summer Institute: Serve as content and production lead for twice yearly symposia and biennial Summer Institute; work with faculty to develop agendas, identify, invite, and interact with speakers, and cultivate content; spot opportunities to develop new educational events based on stakeholder interests.
- Conferences and Exhibits: Maintain Occ Health Sci presence at relevant statewide and national conferences, through exhibits and speaking opportunities; identify new regional and national opportunities to feature Occ Health Sci and OHWC’s work and develop compelling presentations and materials that showcase this work and research.
Partnerships Management and Development:
- Initiate, lead and participate in community planning partnerships, collaborations, and committees related to occupational safety/health and employee wellness; serve on committees established or coordinated by Oregon OSHA, including technical rulemaking, Oregon Construction Advisory Committee, and GOSH and other conference planning; serve as key point of contact for unions, regulators, and trade organizations; provide support to local/regional professional societies, including the American Society of Safety Professionals, Pacific NW Chapter of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, Oregon State Association of Occupational Health Nurses, and the Risk Management Association.
- Develop new relationships with employers in key industry sectors exploring and/or implementing TWH approaches in the Pacific Northwest; explore and design/build strategic partnership opportunities with agencies, employers and/or industry associations related to TWH.
- Spot consulting opportunities and potential service lines based on knowledge of the field and employer demand for products and services.
Communication and Dissemination: Work closely with faculty members and research teams performing basic, clinical and applied research in order to summarize, distill, and create presentations/briefs to communicate their research findings to practitioners; help build an easily accessible, web-based repository of useful information, best practices, and lessons learned from applied research projects; work as member of a team to design dissemination and research “launch” strategies and approaches; identify key audiences, conferences, employers, industry associations, etc. that would benefit from Occ Health Sci research findings and develop compelling presentations to communicate these findings; work with communications manager to place articles in practitioner journals/publications: support Outreach communications through regular contributions to the Occ Health Sci newsletter, blog, and social media.
- Master’s degree in relevant field and a minimum of 5 years experience OR
- Equivalent combination of Bachelor’s in relevant field in conjunction with training and 8 years experience
- 5+ years in occupational safety and health, education, training, consulting, enforcement, and/or public-private partnership development
- Familiarity with TWH concepts
- Consulting and/or teaching experience in occupational safety/health
- Experience planning and delivering educational conferences and presentations
- Strong analytical and writing skills
- Experience developing and/or supporting strategic partnerships
- Familiarity with state and federal agencies working in the occupational safety and health arena
- Fluency in standard office technologies including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and One Drive
- Master’s in public health, industrial hygiene, industrial engineering /human factors/ergonomics, occupational-health nursing, psychology or public policy
- Human resources experience
Hybrid in-person/remote position that will require regular time in the office for team building and work planning (likely 2-3 days per week). Requires occasional travel throughout Oregon, as well as some national travel for conferences. May require some weekends and evenings.
Requires the ability to sit and use a computer for 5-8 hours at one time, to conduct 6-8 hour training sessions on up to 4 consecutive days and ability to lift 25 lbs.
